About METAMORPHOne day late in March, I was at home in isolation trying to understand what was happening to us all. And so, like many, I got to Googling Covid 19. The C on my keyboard got stuck however, and I found myself amongst a series of quotes by the Roman poet, Ovid. Oh how I love a good play on words. Even more than this, I love serendipity. The more quotes I read, the more relevant they felt. It soon became clear to me, that Covid and Ovid have much more in common than just 4 letters.
For Ovid, everything can be transformed into new forms. In his epic poem, Metamorphoses, characters are turned into flowers, birds, trees, rocks, animals and constellations.
Right now, the entire world is in a drastic state of metamorphosis. Our way of life is rapidly transforming as a new future is being not only imagined, but created.
The works contained in this collection explore the theme of transformation; past, present and future.
We see works that speak of human resilience and the transformative powers of nature. We see works that are closely inspired by Ovid, and others that are personal responses to the presence of Covid-19.
Thank you to all participants for sharing your reflections with us during this time of uncertainty and helping us to feel less alone.
METAMORPH is a reminder that experiences are fleeting, change is inevitable and humans are adaptable. We hope that this collection will provide some comfort in the present and remind us in the future of a time when we survived.
